- The Darling catchment contains a number of significant National Parks including:
Mootwingee – North of Broken Hill.
Mungo – East of Pooncarie.
Kinchega – At Menindee.
Gunderbooka – South of Bourke.
Culgoa – North of Brewarrina.
Mallee Cliffs – At Buronga.
- The Darling catchment contains a number of places on the register of the National Estate and includes places of environmental and cultural significance such as Lake Mungo.
- The Darling River has been subject to extremes of floods and drought. The largest flood in recent times was recorded in 1956 when both the Darling and the Murray rivers were in flood. A number of towns were isolated for weeks and Wentworth was almost completely inundated.
- Author Henry Lawson wrote after his visit to Bourke in 1893, ‘If you know Bourke, you know Australia”.
